In the capital of Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, a powerful explosion occurred on the evening of September 2, shortly after a public rally of the Baluchistan National Party (BNP-Mengal). At least 13 people were killed and 35 others injured in the attack.
Separately, five security personnel were killed in a blast in Kech district the same day.
According to officials, the Quetta explosion took place near Shahwani Stadium, in the parking area where vehicles of rally participants were stationed.
The BNP rally was addressed by BNP chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal, Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Awami National Party’s Asghar Khan, and several other political leaders.
Akhtar Mengal posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had survived the attack unharmed, but 15 of his party members had been killed and many others injured.
BNP leader Sajid Tareen said that 13 of the party’s workers were killed in the blast, while many others were wounded. Reports state the explosion occurred about 15 minutes after the rally concluded.
According to late-night statements from the Balochistan Home Department, investigations into the incident have been launched.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and several political leaders condemned the blast.
Kech blast
Meanwhile, on the same day, September 2, another explosion struck Kech district of Balochistan, killing five security personnel and injuring three others. Reports suggest that a Frontier Corps vehicle was targeted in the attack, leading to the casualties.
