In Kurram, a tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bordering Afghanistan, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a passenger vehicle, killing at least six people, officials said.
According to police, the armed attack took place today, September 3, in the Almakot area of Lower Kurram.
Kohat Division Police Chief Abbas Majid Marwat confirmed to the media that six people were killed in the attack on the passenger vehicle.
He added that after the incident, search operations were launched in the area, and several suspects have been arrested.
Earlier, Kurram District Police Chief Malik Habib Khan had stated that the attackers fled the scene after the incident.
Kurram has faced insecurity for years, and since last year, armed attacks in the area have increased, often taking on a sectarian dimension between Shia and Sunni communities.
At least 30 people were killed in such incidents last year.
Community leaders from both Sunni and Shia sides have condemned these attacks, saying miscreants are using such violence to fuel sectarian clashes in the region.
Following last year’s wave of violence and killings, peace agreements and ceasefire deals were reached in the area, but incidents of insecurity have continued.
