Global Opioid Market Faces Major Shift After Afghanistan Opium Decline

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has reported a major transformation in global opioid markets following a dramatic decline in Afghanistan’s opium production.

According to the 2026 World Drug Report, Afghanistan’s opium production has dropped by 95 percent since 2023, leading to a significant reduction in heroin supplies and rapidly shrinking existing stockpiles.UNODC warned that the shortage of heroin may push criminal networks toward synthetic drug alternatives, creating new challenges for global public health and security.

The report highlighted that the sharp fall in Afghan opium production has changed the dynamics of the international opioid trade and stressed the importance of stronger global cooperation to tackle emerging drug-related threats.
