Government Forms Committee to Assess Flood Damage to Archaeological Sites and Museums

The Directorate General of Archaeology, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has constituted a special committee to evaluate the damage caused to archaeological sites and museums across the province by recent floods and heavy rains.

The committee, comprising experts and officers from the Archaeology Department, will visit flood-affected areas to conduct on-ground inspections of historical and cultural heritage sites. Their findings will be compiled in a detailed report, which must be submitted to the provincial government within a week, officials told

Based on the committee’s recommendations, the department will prepare restoration and conservation plans to return heritage sites to their original condition. Additionally, long-term strategies for disaster risk reduction and heritage protection will be proposed to mitigate future damages.

The Directorate General has issued official instructions and constituted separate teams for different regions:

Malakand Division:
Mohid Gul (Curator),

Amanullah (Assistant Director), Fazal Ahad (Work Supervisor)

Hazara Division: Syed Niaz Ali Shah (Curator), Muhammad Munir (Archaeological Conservator)

Mardan: Niaz Wali (Field Supervisor), Muhammad Tayyab

Swabi & Buner: Gul Nabi (Field Officer), Arshad Khan (Sub Engineer)

Each team is tasked with documenting and reporting the extent of damage to archaeological sites and museums in their respective regions within the stipulated timeframe.

Government Concern Over Cultural Heritage

According to Dr. Abdul Samad, Director General of Archaeology and Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s historical and cultural heritage is under significant threat due to recent floods. He emphasized that the provincial government is committed to implementing effective measures for protection, preservation, and restoration of its heritage assets.
