Kabul: Two separate suspected drone strikes in eastern Afghanistan — one in Khost province’s Spera district and another in Nangarhar province’s Shinwaro district — have left at least three children dead and eight other civilians wounded, sparking outrage among local communities.
No official from word from Kabul on these airstrikes, as who carried out them.
The deadliest attack took place in Laghori village of Spera district, Khost province, where the house of Naeem Gul, son of Sajeem Khan, was struck late Wednesday. According to residents, the explosion damaged the family home, killing three children on the spot: seven-year-old Noreeda, seven-year-old Humayun, and four-year-old Hamza. Four others, including teenage girls, were injured.
“The explosion shook the whole village,” said Rahimullah, a resident who rushed to the scene. “We pulled the children out from under the rubble. They had nothing to do with the war.”
Local officials confirmed that the Spera District Police responded quickly, but they found the house completely destroyed and even the family’s vehicle — a Toyota sedan — heavily damaged.
In a separate incident, two drone strikes hit the home of Shah Sawar, a poor farmer, in the 28th Weala area of Shinwaro district, Nangarhar province. The blasts injured three children and a woman, and destroyed three rooms of the family’s house. Witnesses described children screaming as neighbours tried to dig them out of the debris. “These are poor families,” said a tribal elder from Shinwaro. “They have no connections to any group. Yet their children are the ones paying the price.”
The wounded in both provinces were transferred to hospitals for treatment, with doctors reporting their condition as stable. Nangarhar’s deputy governor, Mawlawi Azizullah Mustafa, expressed sorrow over the Shinwaro incident and directed health authorities to provide full care for the victims. In a statement, he said: “Afghanistan seeks peace and stability, good relations with its neighbours, and a neutral role in international affairs. Such actions will only destabilize the region.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the strikes, and Afghan authorities have not confirmed whether foreign drones were involved. However, the incidents have fuelled anger in both provinces, where residents accuse “foreign forces” of disregarding civilian lives. “This is another ruthless bombing on Afghan soil,” said a Khost elder, requested not mention his name due to sensitivity of the issue.
