Pak-Afghan Forces Clash at Border Amid Escalating Tensions

CBN247 :

Armed clashes erupted Tuesday evening between Pakistani and Afghan forces along the border near Shah Kot in the Nazyan district of Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan. The exchange of fire later subsided, and there have been no confirmed reports of casualties.

Pakistani authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Afghan officials, however, said forces of the Islamic Emirate responded after Pakistani troops allegedly initiated the attack.

The confrontation follows heightened tensions between the two neighbors after Pakistani fighter jets and drones carried out airstrikes late Saturday night in Paktika and Nangarhar provinces. Islamabad stated that the strikes targeted militant hideouts linked to attacks in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Afghan officials rejected those claims, asserting that 25 civilians were killed in the airstrikes. Kabul accused Pakistan of violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty and warned that it reserves the right to respond.

Border crossings between the two countries have remained closed since October 11, 2025, following several days of cross-border hostilities.

The latest violence risks further straining already fragile relations between the two sides, as diplomatic engagement remains limited. Regional countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, and China are reportedly working to de-escalate tensions, though no diplomatic breakthrough has yet been announced.

Zabihullah Noorani, head of information and culture for Nangarhar province, told National Television that Pakistani forces opened fire Tuesday evening in the Kot area of Nazyan district. He said Afghan border forces responded, adding that the clashes have since stopped and no Afghan casualties were reported.
