Taliban Interior Minister Haqqani Resurfaces at Kandahar Meeting After Months-Long Absence

After missing for several months from the scene, the acting interior minister Siraj Uddin Haqqani attended a high-level meeting in Kandahar. The meeting was presided over by the Taliban Chief Sheikh Hibatullah Akhund.

Zabihullah Mujahid on his X page reported a high-level meeting was held in Kandahar. The meeting was attended by the acting defence minister Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, acting interior minister Siraj Uddin Haqqani, head of the general directorate of intelligence Abdul Haq Wasiq, deputy defense minister Maulavi Abdul Qayoom Zakir and Maulavi Muhammad Nabi Umari.

The meeting discussed security situation in the country. Reports on security were presented in the meeting and directives were issued to the respective ministers.

Siraj Uddin Haqqani reportedly was missing from the scene and had visited UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He returned to the country recently but appeared in his native province Khost.

Reports say he has developed some differences with the top leadership or Kandahari group over some issues.

Sources privy to the development said UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia mediated to resolve the issue. Haqqanis are said to be powerful group and the continued differences were causing instability in the war-torn Afghanistan.
