MARDAN: Police in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province foiled a grenade attack on a police post in Mardan district, killing the suspected attacker and leaving three police officers with minor injuries, officials said.
The attack took place at at the Sari Behlol police post, which falls within the jurisdiction of Takht Bhai police station, according to police.
Police said an unidentified attacker threw a hand grenade at the post, but a sentry on duty responded immediately and killed the assailant.
A second grenade in the attacker’s hand also exploded during the exchange of fire, police said.
Three officers who were on duty inside the post sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Acting Mardan District Police Officer Maria Mustafa, visited the scene along with other senior police officials to assess the situation.
She later visited the injured officers at the hospital and directed the relevant authorities to ensure that they received the best available medical care and all necessary assistance during treatment.
Police said a search and surveillance operation was continuing in the area and that further investigations into the attack were underway.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.
Pakistan (Khyber pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan) experienced a significant rise in security-related violence in 2025. According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), 3,417 people were killed and 2,134 injured in 1,272 incidents involving terrorist attacks and counterterrorism operations across the country.
