In a major diplomatic development, Russia is the first country to recognise the government of the Afghan Taliban.
According to a statement issued by the ministry of foreign affairs of Afghanistan, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, met with the Acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on Thursday. During the meeting, Ambassador Zhirnov officially conveyed the Russian government’s decision to formally recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
The Russian envoy highlighted the importance of this decision, describing it as a historic step toward strengthening bilateral relations between Russia and Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Muttaqi welcomed the Russian Federation’s move, calling it a new phase of positive relations, mutual respect, and constructive engagement between the two countries. He emphasized that this realistic decision by Russia marks a significant milestone in the history of Afghan-Russian relations and could serve as a model for other nations considering similar actions.
Minister Muttaqi further stated that this recognition would help expand bilateral cooperation across various sectors, paving the way for deeper and broader engagement between the two nations.
